Don't like it? Change it!

So now that I'm all moved in, I decided to start decorating.  This house is so much bigger than my old one that I actually need to go shopping (aw shucks!).  My husband and I decided that since we live in the country, we might as well decorate country style.  To him that means cowboy boots and Wranglers but to me it means Americana.

We bought a calendar block at a big chain store.  The only color they had was red and it was, literally, the only one I could find in the whole store.  I bought it for about $6.50 because it was on a 1/2 price sale (yay!); the color didn't bother me so much at that price.  I had everything else I needed on hand at home.

My husband said that he would prefer it to be a dark blue.  I love blue so I did not argue with him.  Over this past weekend, I went to work.  Here is the block holder without the blocks:

My least favorite color is probably red so I was very ecstatic that he wanted to change the color.  While he was away at work I sanded the finish on the base just enough that it would accept a new color.  Then I painted it navy blue.

It still looked a little plain to me so I printed out a couple of templates.  My husband is a huge Dallas Cowboys fan so I made a DC star and on the other side a flag.  Here is the finished result:

Yes, you can see my mistakes but I think it kind of adds to it's charm.  I can always fix those problems if I need to.  I'm actually planning on sanding the pictures to make them look a bit more rustic.  I'm hoping that will also help. Not bad for $6.50 though.

I hope everyone has a very happy 4th of July celebration.  God bless America!
